The theater has a historic curtain realized by the important Lombard scenographer and Alessandro Sanquirico (Milan 1777-1849), a pupil of Piermarini too.It represents the death of Plinio il Vecchio during the eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD, as is known Pliny was born in Como in 23 AD.

The Società dei Palchettisti (Society of the Box Owners) charges Giuseppe Cusi of the project of the theatre and begins its construction.
1812
Luigi Canonica, considered the most important theatre architect of the period, continues Cusi's work.
Alessandro Sanquirico, set designer of the Teatro alla Scala, paints the historic curtain.
1813
The theatre is inaugurated.
1855
Leopoldo Rospini is commissioned to raise the hall and move the stage back to enlarge the stalls.
The vaulted ceiling is frescoed by Eleuterio Pagliano, following a project by Gaetano Speluzzi.
1899
The theater is equipped with an electrical system.
1909
The fourth tier of boxes is removed to make way for a second gallery.
1984 - 1988
Significant restoration work and compliance with safety regulations are carried out.
