A fire completely destroys the building.
1983
Following Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's visit to Japan, this latter donates Egypt the funds needed for the construction of a new theater.
1985
Construction begins, designed by the Japanese architectural firm Nikken Sekkei.
1988
The Cairo Opera House is inaugurated.
