The government of Guanajuato commissions José Noriega with the project.
Construction begins, it will last 31 years.
Antonio Rivas Mercado takes over from Noriega and substantially modifies the initial project.

The inauguration is with a performance of Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, in the presence of Mexican President Porfirio Díaz.
